Google has obtained one of its biggest-ever cloud-computing contracts, Spanish-language broadcaster Univision Communications Inc., in a deal that indicates how the tech giant is leveraging other parts of its operation to drive business to its cloud division. The Alphabet Inc. unit, which revealed the deal on Monday, beat out rival services by packing its offering with benefits across its Youtube video platform, advertising and search services, according to company executives. The deal value could exceed $1 billion over its eight-year operation. That empire wide offering was the deciding moment, Univision Chief Executive Wade Davis stated in an interview. Univision is planning to turn its US network into a digital platform that reaches Spanish speakers around the world, and working with Google was more lucrative, rather than finding a mixture of partners who could meet its needs. The Univision deal highlights how tech behemoths grow by relying on established products to build promising businesses.
