The US Commerce Department seeks to issue an order Friday that will prevent people in the US from downloading Chinese-owned messaging app WeChat and video-sharing app TikTok initiating from September 20.

The ban on new US downloads of TikTok could be reversed by President Donald Trump before it takes effect as TikTok owner ByteDance races to secure an agreement for the outcome of its US operations.

ByteDance has been in talks with Oracle Corp and others to create a new company, TikTok Global, with main focus to address US concerns over the security of its user’s data. ByteDance still requires Trump’s approval to hold off a US ban.
